How to Choose a Candle Scent - A Guide to Fragrance Families

By Laullie Beya | Laurence & Co. Atelier

Choosing a candle scent should be a pleasure. And yet, faced with a beautiful collection of options, most of us hesitate. We second-guess ourselves. We reach for something familiar when something extraordinary was right there.

The truth is, choosing a fragrance is not complicated - it simply helps to have a framework. Perfumers have long organised scent into families: broad categories that share a common character, a similar feeling, a recognisable mood. Once you understand which family you're drawn to, finding your perfect candle becomes instinctive.

Here is a guide to the five fragrance families and the Laurence & Co. Atelier candle that belongs to each one.

Floral - Romantic, Soft, Feminine

Floral is the oldest and most beloved fragrance family in the world. It is the language of romance, of beauty, of quiet femininity. Floral scents are built around the essence of flowers, sometimes a single bloom, sometimes a bouquet, and they carry with them a softness that no other fragrance family quite matches.

If you are drawn to beauty in its most classic form, if you love the feeling of fresh flowers in a room, if your spaces tend toward the elegant and the considered then floral is your family.

The Laurence & Co. Atelier florals:

The Silken Protea Candle is a South African interpretation of romantic florals -  soft, full, and deeply feminine. Where a European peony speaks of formal gardens, Silken Protea speaks of something wilder and more rooted. The protea, South Africa's national flower, is hardy and extraordinary in equal measure. This candle captures both.

The Jacaranda Haze Candle is a softer, more atmospheric floral, the kind that fills a room the way jacaranda blossoms fill a Johannesburg street in October. Dreamy, powdery, unmistakably beautiful. If Silken Protea is a single stem in a vase, Jacaranda Haze is an entire avenue in bloom.

Floral candles work beautifully in: bedrooms, dressing rooms, bathrooms, living spaces where you want warmth and elegance.

Citrus - Bright, Energising, Uplifting

Citrus fragrances are the most immediately approachable of all the families. They are bright without being sharp, energising without being harsh. A great citrus candle does something remarkable -  it makes a room feel alive. It lifts the mood without announcing itself. It is the olfactory equivalent of sunlight through a window on a clear morning.

If you love clean, fresh spaces, if you gravitate toward brightness and optimism, if your home is full of light - citrus is your family.

The Laurence & Co. Atelier citrus candles:

The Lowveld Sunrise Candle is grapefruit and warmth and the particular quality of early morning light over the South African Lowveld. It began as a personal obsession with grapefruit fragrance and evolved into something more specific, the feeling of a sunrise in a landscape that has no equal. Bright, clean, quietly joyful.

The Rooibos Rain Candle sits at the intersection of citrus and something earthier -  the clean sharpness of rooibos tea lifted by the freshness of rain on dry ground. It is distinctly South African, deeply comforting, and unlike anything you will find in a European fragrance house.

Citrus candles work beautifully in: kitchens, home offices, entrance halls, any space where you want to feel alert and energised.

Woody & Warm - Grounding, Sophisticated, Sensual

Woody fragrances are the most complex of the families. They draw on the deep, resinous scents of the natural world - sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, oud - and layer them into something that feels both grounding and sophisticated. A great woody candle does not simply scent a room. It transforms it. It makes a space feel anchored, considered, and quietly sensual.

If you prefer depth over brightness, if your aesthetic tends toward the dramatic and the considered, if you want your home to feel like somewhere truly grown-up,  woody is your family.

The Laurence & Co. Atelier woody candle:

The Highveld Dusk Candle is the most complex candle in the collection. It captures the feeling of the Highveld at the end of the day - that particular warmth that settles over the landscape as the light fades, amber and deep and unhurried. Rich, sophisticated, and unmistakably African. This is a candle for evenings. For a glass of wine. For the kind of quiet that only comes after a long day.

Woody candles work beautifully in: living rooms, studies, dining rooms, any space where you entertain or unwind at the end of the day.

Aquatic - Clean, Calm, Expansive

Aquatic fragrances occupy a space all their own. They are not quite fresh, not quite floral, not quite anything else - they are the scent of water, of open air, of the particular calm that comes from being near the ocean or a body of still water. The best aquatic fragrances feel like breathing space. They open a room up rather than filling it. They are the least assertive of the families, and often the most quietly powerful.

If you love the ocean, if you value serenity over drama, if your spaces are calm and uncluttered , aquatic is your family.

The Laurence & Co. Atelier aquatic candle:

The Coastal Drift Candle is salt air and open sky and the particular stillness of the South African coast. It does not shout. It simply makes a room feel calmer, more open, more like somewhere you want to stay. If you have ever stood at the edge of the ocean and felt everything quiet down - this is that feeling, in a candle.

Aquatic candles work beautifully in: bathrooms, bedrooms, meditation spaces, any room where calm is the priority.
